Mountain man James Capen Adams, known famously as Grizzly Adams, had a favorite pet bear named after Benjamin Franklin. Grizzly Adams had captured the bear as a cub in 1854, and the bear became a faithful lifelong companion. Benjamin Franklin the bear accompanied Grizzly Adams on his hunting expeditions and is credited with having saved Adams' life during two “long and desperate struggles with savage animals in the wilds.” Grizzly Adams was related to the famous Adams of Massachusetts, among them President John Adams and patriot Samuel Adams.
