  • A memorial dedicated to President Abraham Lincoln in Washington, D.C., was first approved by Congress in 1911. The bill authorizing the construction created the Lincoln Memorial Commission to approve a site and a design for a memorial honoring the 16th President. Construction began in 1914 and was completed in 1922.

    The Lincoln Memorial is a major attraction in Washington, D.C., and since the 1930s has been a symbolic center focused on race relations. The memorial has been the site of many famous speeches, including Dr. Martin Luther King Jr’s 'I Have a Dream' speech, delivered on August 28, 1963.
