  • The sculptural representation of the famous image captured by Associated Press photographer Joe Rosenthal, illustrates the moment that the U.S. flag was raised on Mount Suribachi on Japan's' Iwo Jima, on 23 February, 1945. Created by Sculptor Felix W. de Weldon, the piece is part of the United States Marine Corps War Memorial (Iwo Jima Memorial) located in Arlington, Virginia. The memorial is dedicated the Marine dead of all wars, and their comrades of other services who fell fighting beside them.
